HAMMOND, La- (May 2,2025)- For Brailey Babin, tutoring at the Tinsley Learning Center began as a way to serve, but it quickly became the place where she found her voice and calling.
Babin is known at the Learning Center for being the peace of the room, attentive, and helpful.
She is currently a part of the Tinsley Administration. Candidates must be at least a level two tutor which means they’ve attended 20 hours of training and over 50 tutor time.
Babin is already level one and two certified. She is also currently completing level three tutor training for the CRLA, College Reading and Learning Association, and has acquired over 140 hours of tutoring time.
Babin has also completed over 20 hours of professional training. Tinsley director Marie Bernard notes Babin’s impact goes beyond those numbers.
“Brailey is the calm in the room and an exceptional communicator. She has been a tutor and a campus tour guide for many semesters. She is knowledgeable about her subject matter, and quite skilled in teaching her clients how to incorporate new study skills,” said Bernard.
Babin, originally a nursing major, started working at the Learning Center two and a half years ago. Shortly after becoming a tutor, she discovered the Engineering Technology program and made a swift decision to change career paths.
“Tinsley inspired me to try something out of my comfort zone,” Babin said.
Her inspiration for wanting to help others began in high school when she started tutoring. Since becoming a tutor in college, Babin has grown to be one of the Learning Center’s top tutors.
“Brailey is always available for training new tutors. She is ‘Team Tinsley.’ She is well respected by her clients, and is often sought out for Peer Assisted Study Sessions,” said Bernard.
Though Babin does an exceptional job, not every day at the Learning Center is a breeze. She often struggles with not being able to help every single client.
“The most challenging part is not being able to help someone. Some clients won’t understand the material even after tutoring, and it’s something I struggle with. I give them additional outside resources and hope it helps,” said Babin.
After all the obstacles she has faced, Babin notes the atmosphere and the people have been the most rewarding part of being a student tutor.
“Tinsley has given me the most important thing in life- friends. I have met so many wonderful people including people I would have never met if I wasn’t a tutor. These people have brought out the best in me,” said Babin.
She also acknowledged what she loved most about working at Tinsley.
“I enjoy the community the most. I get to help people too, and I love that. However, the people are what keep me going and coming back every semester. Being a tutor can be difficult at times, but the community behind you really helps,” said Babin.
Looking ahead, she hopes to secure a position in education. Though she’s currently unsure of what lies ahead, it’s her dream to be a teacher of some kind. She hopes her path brings her there.
Bernard, thoughtfully expanded on what she enjoys about working with students like Babin and offered her thoughts on Babin’s optimistic future.
“One of the things I love most about my job is watching my tutors flourish and find their footing. Brailey is no exception. She will be successful in whatever career path she chooses. She handles everything with grit and determination. Her interpersonal communication skills and emotional IQ are exceptional,” said Bernard.
