(HAMMOND, La) The Tinsley Learning Center was a part of the Part-Time Job Fair on Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Union Breezeway.
A table was set up with a few student tutors and their assistant director Marie Bernard to gain more student tutors and advertise their services. Two of the student tutors Trent Rodriguez and Taylor Blakeman have been working at Tinsley for more than one semester now and share a common goal that they want their students to achieve this semester.
“It’s my third semester working here, but we want to make the students better learners, and have the ability to focus on their work, their drive, and to accept their courses,” Rodriguez said.
Taylor nodded her head in agreement and added, “It’s my second semester.”
Bernard responded very thoroughly on what she feels is the most rewarding about being the Assistant Director and what she looks for in her student tutors.
“The most rewarding feeling is watching clients and students come to tutoring. We watch them make a C after tutoring and see that they’ve found that powerful tool for success. It's a celebration for us, it’s rewarding,” says Bernard.
“When hiring a student tutor, we like to look for someone who is bubbly, outgoing, vivacious, and someone who is able to take control and manage a student. We also take faculty recommendations. We actually have a section on our website, if you go to the Tinsley center online, there is a section labeled ‘Join the Team.’ You’ll find our qualifications and the applications,” said Bernard.
Prior to this year’s job fair, Bernard was involved in last spring’s job fair. She has gained two student tutors since that job fair.
“This was my second time at the job fair since COVID-19. Last spring we hired two tutors, and I’ve worked here since July 2019. The kids make me want to come back. I'm a college mom and I’m cool with that. My kids are all in their 20’s. Overall we provide such a great service and benefits, it's been such a great experience,” said Bernard.
If you need to schedule a tutoring appointment with the Tinsley Center, you can schedule any time by going onto their website at http://www.southeastern.edu/acad_research/programs/cse/tutoring/index.html to sign up.
